At United Way of Johnson & Washington Counties (UWJWC), we unite people with a shared vision to create lasting change. By partnering with local nonprofits organizations, community leaders, generous donors, and area businesses, we tackle the challenges we face as neighbors. Together, we unite in purpose to create pathways to a strong, safe, and healthy community for all.

What Does United Way Do?

We harness the power of collective action, focusing on four key areas that have the greatest impact on improving lives in our community:

  • Youth Opportunity: helping young people realize their full potential and supporting birth through adult education.
  • Financial Security: Safety net supports that create a stronger financial future for every generation.
  • Healthy Community: help people overcome barriers to good health, including access to nutritious food, affordable healthcare and preventative initiatives.
  • Community Resiliency: we work to address urgent needs through 211, and disaster preparedness and response.

We provide:

  • Funding to 28 Partner Agencies – carefully vetted and mission-driven organizations addressing the most urgent needs in our community.
  • Support in Times of Crisis – offering essential infrastructure for disaster response and recovery when our neighbors need it most.
  • Education & Literacy Initiatives – like Reading Buddies, Pen Pals, and the distribution of Literacy, Math, and STEM Kits that ignite learning in young minds.
  • Volunteer Connection Hub – linking people to meaningful volunteer opportunities where their skills and energy can make a real difference.

Each year, thousands of residents in Johnson & Washington Counties benefit from the collective efforts of our partners. Together, we ensure that our community thrives—because when it’s better for one of us, it’s better for all of us.

Join our 2024 Campaign: Co-Chairs, Sasha Boros-Schmid and Kate Moreland, who are passionate about the power of community and are leading the charge for this year’s campaign.
